In Slovenia the police dealt with 86,568 criminal offences last year which is an increase of 13% over 2003. The increase is due to a rise in reported crime according to the head of Slovenian police, Darko Anzelj. There was also an increase in the cases of severe crime such as rape and sexual assaults against minors.

Some reasons people dont report crimes.
Sometimes people are too embarrased to report sexual crimes, other people think that the police wont care because there crime isnt serious enough. Other people are worried about what will happen, they dont want to go to court and give evidence ect.
Also a large number of hate crimes: racism and prejudice are not reported because the victims lack confidence, they fear going to court and revenge attacks on them.

Which crimes are reported?
The majority of reported crimes are property related. These include burglary, vehicle theft, vandalism, criminal damage and other theft.
Around a fith are violent crimes, almost half of violent crime involves no injury and only a small proportion involves serious violence.

The crimes that are reported are the more serious crime e.g. theft of a car. These crimes are reported because the victims of the crime feel that the crime is important enough to report it. some crimes are not reported because they are to small of a crime and the victims of the crime dont feel the need to report the crime and it will be to much effort for something so small.
crime is amplyfied by the media in many ways this can make the crime look worse or even make an inoccent person look guilty.

You've only to look at the reporting of the James Bulger case to see all kinds of icky processes at work in terms of the reporting of crime. After all, the murderers themselves were still very young children and probably had no really clear understanding of what they were doing. Same with Maxine Carr in the Soham case...

But James Bulger was years ago! Isn't there something nearer to nowadays?

It is still in the news. I had an email last week from some group asking that the two boys should not be protected with anonymity and that they should be public. It doesn't go away from people's minds that quickly.

The case of Maxine Carr is a more recent one. She's been made out really badly in the press, but all she actually did was provide an alibi for her boyfriend.
